Race 17, 2nd Half

Sep 01, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

The last race of the 2016 Wednesday Night season was conducted in ideal wind conditions blowing at 8-11 knots from the SE and shifts would make it possible to climb up the course quickly. The RC set an I-7 course with Hogback as the windward mark and an orange ball as the leeward mark giving the option of getting in a 50 -60 minute race on the short legged course in good winds. The RC also set a short starting line and hoisted the I and Z flags at the prep signal. The start was contested well back of the start line and all boats got away cleanly but right after the start signal, John Tarrant in the new VX1 made a quick tack to port right into the path of Wild Thing. John and Spencer both steered to minimize the bump and John got left behind the fleet doing penalty circles right in front of the RC boat. With a series of tacks to work the shifts up to the first mark, Vaporize got there first followed by Spirit, Witch Way, and Uncle Ludwig respectively. From there it seemed that the season finale would be a contest between the seasons top 3 boats with Vaporize dashing in and out of the scene. Witch Way gybed early on the 1st leeward leg and as the 3 top boats neared the RC boat Spirit, on port gybe, was forced to head up hard and duck behind Witch Way. Momentum carried Spirit into an overlap and with the mark getting closer Witch Way had to gybe to port to stay in contention. Uncle Ludwig was poised to pounce on any mistakes by the leading J24’s. Vaporize sailing wide angle reaches screamed into the leeward mark on starboard gybe threading between the boats to round 2nd. Uncle Ludwig tacked immediately upon rounding and in sync with Witch Way, a few boats to windward. Spirit opted for a later tack and another up wind dual changed the leader board at the next mark. Witch Way’s chute did not come out cleanly and the lead switched again. As the boats closed on the anchored RC boat and the elapsed time running at 37 minutes the RC picked up and moved to Hogback for the finish. The furious race kept the RC’s attention on the leaders but Animal was not that far behind and Windog was sailing a great race against the rest of the fleet. With each leg being sailed in approximately 10 minutes with multiple tacks and gybes a few spectator boats were getting a real show. Dave and Nelson came into the last mark on another screaming fast reach and then unfortunately dumped the chute in the water leaving the leading trio to pick their courses up to the finish. Spirit tried to cover both the contenders but as the final yards ticked away needed to tack to port to cross the line. Witch Way called for starboard rights and Spirit had to duck again allowing Alfie and crew to then make the close covering tack on top of Spirit to cross the line 1st. Uncle Ludwig was a few boats length back but Spirit held them off to take 2nd . And so the race and the season ended with the top 3 boats placing in order. Well done!! Animal’s 4th place finish helped close the gap but Windog’s 5th beat out both Animal and Vaporize (by ½ pt) for the 2nd Half 5th place. Spencer and the crew of Wild Thing preserved their well-deserved 4th place for 1st & 2nd Halves and the season.

Race 16 - 2nd Half

Aug 24, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

The competitors were treated to another beautiful night on Lake George with SSE winds at 8-10 at the start. A four-leg course was chosen, using North Canoe as the first windward mark, the pin end of the start line as the second (leeward) mark and then a long leg to the Diamond Island government mark, followed by the downwind leg to finish. Thanks to Deb Katz helping with RC duties! John Tarrant was competing single handed in the new VX1 and showed remarkable speed on the start line. Spirit and Brad’s J/80 had great starts at the committee boat end of the line. Uncle Ludwig barely had enough room left at the pin end but everyone got away cleanly and the sprint was on to the first mark. Witch Way and Spirit had a private battle during the first upwind. Brad, unmolested on the west side of the course, made it the mark first followed by Uncle Ludwig and Animal. With an uncharacteristic hourglass, Witch Way lost some ground to the ever-present Spirit and both boats established a nice rhythm down to the second mark. The first two legs were sailed in about 15 minutes which was slower than the RC had expected. As the fleet was rounding the second mark, Cut Loose, being sailed single-handed by John Dickinson, started the race. As the fleet sailed upwind to Diamond Island the wind slowed and there were hints of holes appearing to the south and west of the course. With the wind velocity and sun dropping the RC raced through the fleet up to the mark and saw Brad leading with Witch Way and Windog in competitive positions based on time allowance. John T’s new VX1 had a good showing even though limited to one person and no spinnaker! At the turn the RC signaled a change of course to an orange ball set just to the southwest of Speaker Heck. With the assurance that the fleet had been notified, the RC boat raced back to drop anchor for the finish. During the last leg, the wind stayed in a nice band straight down the course but was fading to the west. Vaporize, after a tough time on the upwind leg, chased down the VX1 in the wind band while Animal, Uncle Ludwig and Spirit watched their spinnakers collapse on the west side of the course. Spirit was able to gybe back out into the wind earlier than the other two boats. Brad led the way to the finish with Witch Way and Wild Thing making good time down the middle a few minutes behind. Windog also sailing down the middle was able to capture fourth across the line and third for the night, ahead of the unfortunate west side pack of J/24s. Congratulations to Alfie Merchant and crew for capturing another win, with Brad taking second for the night.

Race 15

Aug 17, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

No wind throughout the day made last evening’s race doubtful as the RC made its way out onto the lake. (Thanks to Diana Voss for helping out on RC.) However, by 6pm the wind steadily filled in from the south, from Dunham's Bay to Dome Island. A W4 was selected with the RC anchored off Yankee, using the South Canoe government mark as the windward mark (all islands to port). The start saw all boats start without incident on the short line, with Spirit getting the windward advantage on most boats. Wild Thing immediately tacked off to port taking advantage of short duration lift. Cut Loose followed and the fleet swapped a lot of tacks on the upwind leg.Vaporize worked its way through the lulls to round first at the 18-minute mark and led the fleet back through the slot between Speaker Heck and Canoe Islands. Animal, Wild Thing, Spirit, and Witch Way were all close at the rounding. Vaporize gybed towards the west side of the course, opting to not cover Wild Thing and ran into one of the lulls spotting the course just a few minutes later. Animal tried the extreme east side and also lost ground. Wild Thing stayed slightly east of Spirit and Witch Way and established the lead into the second mark. The next upwind leg looked very spotty so the RC changed and shortened the course to a line between the RC and a point on the south island. Coming out of the leeward mark, Spencer and crew stayed in a stripe of higher velocity wind to establish a solid lead. Spirit and Witch Way, in close company, followed next. Spencer continued to move away from the fleet with an isolated lift and two quick tacks up the final leg. Spirit held off Witch Way while Vaporize, a few boat lengths back, tried to find wind on the eastern side of the course. Brad found himself in between Witch Way and Vaporize on the last leg. Even though the wind got even more spotty, the velocity in the other spots was quite high. Spencer on Wild Thing led the fleet across the line by more than four minutes, but Spirit had gained enough ground to take the win for the night by just 15 seconds on corrected time. Witch Way took third both across the line and on corrected. With two races left in the season the point race for third and fourth is close.

Race 14 2nd Half

Aug 10, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 14 was sailed under clear skies with a consistent south breeze blowing at ~ 5 -7 knots. 11 boats made it out to the W6 course with Hogback as the windward mark and a tetrahedron for the start and leeward mark. The line was set with a pin end favor. With most boats opting for a mid-line to pin High Jinx pushed Vaporize dangerously close to being called over early. Uncle Ludwig ran out of line and needed to gybe around and weave through the rest of fleet crossing the “T” on port. Wild Thing tacked on to Port early and led a few more boats taking the west side of the course. Vaporize, Witch Way, and Spirit were among the contenders looking to the east side for advantage. At the first mark Dave led the way, Wild Thing and Brad’s J80 slipping ahead of Witch Way clearly leading the J/24 pack. A late set and hourglass on Brad’s boat would shuffle the pack by the next rounding. The sport boats split again on the downwind with Vaporize heading west, Wild Thing down the middle and Brad out on the east. The J/24 fleet had a great run straight down the middle with a few gybes to keep lined up on the tetrahedron. Vaporize and Wild Thing led around the mark again but Witch Way, Spirit, and Uncle Ludwig got ahead of Brad. Vaporize held off Wild Thing until the 2nd downwind rounding where Spencer, sticking to the east side, crossed Dave just a few yards from the tetrahedron and headed back towards Hogback in slightly increasing wind velocity. With the sun setting behind the western ridge the RC moved up to Hogback for the finish after 5 legs. Vaporize got ahead of Wild Thing on the last leg for line honors and Witch Way dominated the result crossing the line 3rd but over 3 minutes ahead on corrected time. Meanwhile, Spirit covered Uncle Ludwig on the eastern horizon where they fell into the wind shadow of Long Island. This allowed woot! and Windog to cross the line ahead of them. Cut Loose was able to nip out Uncle Ludwig at the finish widening the point spread between Spirit and Uncle Ludwig. Congratulations to Alfie and crew for another win, Spencer took 2nd by 4 seconds over Dave, and well done Windog for making up a lot of ground in the final leg. The full results are below with a synopsis of the series standings. Next week will be a full moon and a raft up will take place directly after the last boat finishes, weather permitting. Also the end of the year celebration at Carl R’s is being planned and this year some extra “prizes” by GILL will be drawn using a random number generator based on boat and crew position. Please attend the party to find out who the lucky ones are!

Race 13 2nd half

Aug 03, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

14 boats came out on a beautiful warm evening with enough wind to send them to the Diamond Island mark W on a simple W2 course. It’s been a while since the wind has been favorable for this classic course and a lot of boat crews expressed their appreciation. Animal, hunting the pin end, ran out of line and had to gybe and duck through the fleet at the start. Many boats tacked off to port to clear air at the start but by the time the fleet approached the slot between Speaker Heck and the Canoe islands, most boats had completed a half-dozen tacks. High Jinx was seen crossing lots of bows on starboard tack in the Speaker Heck slot. The typical Dunhams Bay lift never materialized but the veterans of this course were hedging their bets and staying to the east. woot! was out on the west side of the course without losing ground. Vaporize headed into the Diamond Island mark and threw in a couple of big scallops, rounded first and set the chute quickly a couple of minutes ahead of Witch Way, woot! and Spirit. The downwind run saw Vaporize increase its time differential on Witch Way back through the slot. As the rest of fleet came through, the wind started to fade and switched to west. The leading J/24s dropped their spinnakers for a close reach to the finish line. Vaporize held on to the their chute and then at the last minute dropped it and came up smartly to finish, leading the fleet wire to wire. Witch Way crossed the line next and took the victory for the night, with Spirit and Wild Thing in close company. The first four boats to finish stayed ahead of the wind fade. Vaporize took the bronze on corrected time. Race 13 is the first throw-out for the second half — it's a tight point race, but Witch Way has a commanding nine-point lead overall.

Race 12 2nd half

Jul 27, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

The wind kindly decided to swing west prior to the race this week and was at a nice cooling 6 knots. A W6 course was called with the starting area just north of Hogback and the windward Orange Ball mark at 260O several hundred yards off Canoe Island Lodge’s moorings. 17 boats gathered around the committee boat making it our largest fleet for the year! Welcome to Bob Miller and crew – may the “Forza” be with you - and under you – at all times. Although the line was short for the 17 boat fleet there were no real contests on the line. All boats were ~ 1 - 1.5 boats off the line at the start making it easy for the RC to call the all clear. Lots of tacking on the first leg split the fleet up and it was great to see so many sails back lit with the sun. Vaporize led the way around the 1st mark in 14:41, with Witch Way, Iko Iko, and Brad’s J80 in company. Brad lost some distance to Uncle Ludwig with an hour-glassed chute but recovered well on the downwind leg. Wild Thing opted for a more northerly route back to the leeward mark rounding 3rd behind Vaporize at and Brad’s J80 respectively. Dave and Nelson increased their lead on the 3rd leg in the surprising steady breeze. Meanwhile the RC was watching a large wind hole developing south of the Canoe Islands and as the boats rounded the 3rd mark decided to finish them at the next mark. Spirit made up a lot of ground on the final leg passing Witch Way but not quite enough to catch Uncle Ludwig at the finish. Windog also made up some ground following Spirit into slightly higher wind velocity. Congratulations to Dave Brad and Spencer crossing in sequence for line honors. However, Uncle Ludwig took the victory with Spirit’s entanglement at the finish. Well done Windog on taking 3rd for the night. As it turned out the wind continued to blow for all boats to sail back to their docks.

Race 11 2nd Half

Jul 20, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Lake George provided yet another opportunity to test both the competitors and the RC with circling winds. 15 boats made it out to race on a very comfortable evening. Welcome to Rik and the crew of Brass Ring and the crew from YKnot, sailing a Sonar! The initial I5 course set in SE winds had to be changed as the competitors closed on the starting area. A 60o shift to the south left the RC with little choice but to start the fleet and make needed changes during the first leg. The racers worked their way towards Hogback in a steady 6 knot breeze. Most opted to go east initially. Vaporize, Witch Way and Wild Thing were leading the pack as they headed back “up” the lake towards Cotton Point government mark. The wind continued to go west as the fleet as they tightly reached for the leeward mark. Then all were forced to drop their spinnakers and resort to headsails for a beat to Cotton Pt in the last ¼ of the leg with winds dropping dramatically. Vaporize seemed to stop on the western side of the course while Wild Thing was moving steadily on the eastern side. Then it changed again, Vaporize caught a lift and led the way around Cotton Pt completing the 2nd leg. During this the RC dropped a mark to the east of Cotton Pt. in an effort to keep the course square and then retrieved the original marks and got back to Cotton Pt. to communicate the course change with multiple sounds, C flag, Red flag to indicate the course had been changed to port, and a radio broadcast of new heading. The wind increased again and the fleet got their spinnakers flying once again. With a slight reordering at the rounding, the lead boats headed back to Cotton Point where the RC was anchored on what was to be the final leg. AS the lead boats approached the committee boat a shortened course was communicated and Vaporize led the way across the line sticking to a northerly route. Meanwhile Spirit passed Witch Way and Wild Thing on the southerly side. Uncle Ludwig and Cut Loose edged out the two sport boats for 3rd and 4th respectively for the evening. The raft up after the race was graced by a beautiful full moon cresting Pilot Knob just after dark.

Race 9 - 1st Half

Jul 07, 2016      Wind Conditions: Light

Last evening the committee boat set up a W course in steady 4-5 knot EAST winds and “chilled out” for 45 minutes in the 91F heat while eleven boats rigged and came out to the race area. A W6 course was communicated with the intention of shortening the course if needed. The windward tetrahedron was set north of Long Island at 142o. I would like to thank Alfie for his assistance on lengthening the start line and Sandy Powell for helping with RC! And as can be expected on Lake George, the winds started to dwindle within 10 minutes of the start and stopped as the start was signaled. At the start, Wild Thing’s proboscis was clearly over early and in the very light winds had to make a U-turn to clear the line. Unfortunately for the rest of the fleet there was insufficient wind to keep up the momentum generated during the last minute of the start sequence. A lot of fleet were knocked backwards by some waves and obscured the mark for over 10 minutes. Woot! finally cleared the line some 15+ minutes after the start not only contending with waves but the cluster of boats robbing them of any air movement across their sails. Meanwhile, Vaporize capitalized on the meager power generated by their main and coupled with the lightness of the hull drifted out to the front of the pack followed by Witch Way. About 20 minutes into the “floatathon” a very gentle breeze materialized out of the west. Animal’s spinnaker was first to appear followed by the cluster of J24’s within a few boat lengths. It took about a minute for the chutes to fully draw but a few minutes later the sight was more in expectation of a sailboat race.Vaporize, Witch Way, and Wild Thing (nice recovery!) had to wait for the breeze to cross the lake and watched the spinnakers close on them. But the wind steadied in strength and turned the float into a race. Vaporize rounded first, followed by Witch Way, Wild Thing and Animal. As the time was ticking up past the 50 minute mark the predicted Shortened Course was signaled. Vaporize carried the lead throughout the race but Witch Way’s lead on corrected time was substantial. Congratulations to Alfie and crew for not only their win for the evening but winning the first half series with just 12 points and taking 4/9 wins!

Race 8 - 1st Half

Jun 29, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Thirteen boats, the largest fleet of the year so far, participated in last evening’s race. Welcome Fuzzy Logic and Stinger to the mix! With the fairly steady 8 -10 knot winds out of the NE a I5 course was selected with the North Canoe government mark as the leeward mark, the start/finish line just to the north of Yankee and in line with the windward tetrahedron at 045o. At the start Ed Gardner in Iko Iko tacked to port right off the line while the rest of the fleet opted to stay on starboard for some minutes. With such clean air he quickly establish a top tier position. At the first mark it appeared that Vaporize was first around with Iko Iko and Witch Way following. The chute on Vaporize failed to appear immediately and Witch Way and the Iko IKo pounced , striking a course straight down the wind towards North Canoe. The wind swung over to the west as the fleet sailed their first downwind leg so the windward mark was dragged ~ ¼ mile west in an attempt to straighten out the course. The wind stayed fairly west up the second windward leg giving the competitors a lengthy first tack. As they passed the start/finish line the wind swung back more to the north and Witch Way opted for a few short hitches to the west while Iko Iko seemed to just point straight at the mark. Witch Way had a narrow lead at the mark though. The cluster that followed had a significant deficit either in corrected time or distance. The wind went back to the NE as the two leaders were battling for an advantage. During the final leg, rainbows appeared in the eastern sky adding additional majesty to the lake view. Swapping tacks up the final leg Iko Iko gained a one boat length lead over Witch Way to cross the finish line first but Alfie and crew put another win on the board! Wild Thing and Vaporize crossed next but without the needed time margin to keep three J24’s slipping into the top 5. Animal took 3rd for the night. Within a hundred yards of the finish, woot! on starboard tack crossed ahead of the very closely spaced Uncle Ludwig and Spirit, both on the favored port tack. Uncle Ludwig to leeward of Spirit had the easier course around woot!’s stern and beat Rodger and crew across the line. Woot! unfortunately needed to tack to cross the line and finished just behind Spirit.

Race 7 - 1st Half

Jun 22, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Ten boats came out to race on a gorgeous Lake George evening. Shifting winds generally out of the NW posed some problems for the RC prior to the start. The original W4 with a tetrahedron had to be quickly rearranged to accommodate a huge shift to the west. As the RC boat moved up to Hogback reef with the ten boat fleet following , Tom Selfridge made a mad dash up to the windward tetrahedron and dragged it both south and out farther into the lake to avoid a the deepening wind shadow creeping onto the lake. The pin end and leeward mark was changed to the Hogback government mark and a quick look at the wind had the windward mark almost perfectly into the wind for the start. THANKS TOM!!! Of the 10 boats competing 9 heard the course information repeated via radio. Animal unfortunately was significantly over early and failed to clear the correct starting mark, otherwise they would have had a very impressive night. The rest of the boats all started well and the 1st leg saw many tacks up to the weather mark with the sport boats excelling. The lower velocity at the windward mark spread out the fleet. At the 2nd mark Brad Taylor opted for a very conservative take down allowing Wild Thing and Vaporize to close the distance. Woot was not far behind. Witch Way was the top J24 through all consecutive roundings. As the fleet sailed towards the 3rd mark the wind strength dropped which spread out the fleet further. It was a night for the sport boats though, with Wild thing, Brad Taylors J80 and Vaporize crossing for both line honors and points respectively. Alfie and crew took 4th as the top J24 for the evening. As the last of the J24’s completed the course Wild Thing started the process of rafting up. Cold adult beverages were soon passed around and a very boisterous raft-up followed with 7 out of the 10 boats rafting up to the committee boat. The wind picked back up to a gentle and steady northwest breeze as the sun started it’s slow descent behind the west shore mountains. Thanks to all who brought munchies to share! The obvious successful social hours need to be repeated! Please clear your schedules for another raft up tentatively planned on July 13. The raft up broke up towards 10 pm with the light dwindling in the western sky and the moon’s soft glow hinting over the eastern shore mountains. As the committee boat headed back in howling was heard across the water from the vicinity of Yankee – obviously an ancient ritual being performed by a bunch of SPIRIT’s.

Race 6 1st Half

Jun 15, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Very light NNW wind at the start, the crew of Cut Loose acting as RC, and a short I-5 course set up with a windward tetrahedron and Hogback as the leeward mark. The wind filled in at the start, resulting in one of the shortest races of the season so far — Wild Thing took line honors in just over 31 minutes, but Spirit finished less then a minute later to claim the win, pushing Wild Thing to second and J/80 69 third, both across the line and on corrected time.

Race 5 - 1st Half

Jun 08, 2016      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Nine boats competed in the 5th race of the season under grey clouds and cooler than normal temperatures in a gusting and shifting WNW wind. The start line of the W6 course was set slight north of Long island with the weather tetrahedron mark set at 3200. As the fleet approached the starting area the wind suddenly increased and most of the J24’s opted for a head sail change as the RC waited for the last boat to sail across the lake. Last evening we witnessed a sight not seen in many years: a Star headed out of the Lake George Club to compete. Welcome Iko Iko skippered by Ed Gardener. At the start Cut Loose and Spirit had the line virtually uncontested with most boats opting for the boat end of the line but several seconds late. The shifting winds favored Uncle Ludwig’s southerly route to the weather mark and Kyle and crew rounded first with Wild Thing popping their chute next and Ed Gardener in the Star following and sailing deep with the mast butt cranked aft. Several boats opted to not fly their spinnakers in the gusty high winds that prevailed for most of the first 4 legs. At the leeward mark Uncle Ludwig had a clear lead with the Iko Iko and Wild Thing following. Spirit and Witch Way were swapping tacks and on the upwind leg the winds shifted more to the west. The RC moved the leeward mark several hundred yards to the north in an attempt to square up the course. As the evening progressed the winds started to abate allowing some of the J24’s to swap back to their genoa’s. On the final leg, Uncle Ludwig had a major wrap of their chute during a gybe and had already lost some ground to Wild Thing and Iko Iko taking 1st and second line honors. Uncle Ludwig, Witch Way and Spirit had sufficient time on the faster boats to capture the top three spots for the night. I would like to thank Nelson Snowden for assisting on the RC boat last evening. Next week John Dickinson and the crew of Cut Loose will host the evening’s race. Also, the first of 4 scheduled throw outs has reordered the fleet of 14 boats that have raced so far this year. (Kyles 4th in race 4 is a place holder until the 1st half series is complete where either he will take a 6 or the average of his scores as outlined previously).

Race 4 1st Half

Jun 01, 2016      Wind Conditions: Light

Race night 4 provided warm temperatures but little in the way of a steady wind. Kyle Levoy and the extended crew of Uncle Ludwig hosted last evening’s race. Thanks! An I5 was set in the streaky NE air which seemed to increase and disappear in seconds. A windward tetrahedron was placed directly into the prevailing air and North Canoe was used as the leeward turning mark. At the start, the 10 boat fleet spread out along the line and a haphazard fleet split followed. From my vantage point it ws very difficult to tell who was actually in the lead on the way up to the first mark. Witch Way found itself in a hole while others just tens or yards away were clipping along in 4 knots of air.Wild Thing prevailed to lead the way around the first mark with Cut Loose and Catchin J’s next. The sport boats pulled to the front on the down wind leg but 4 of the J24’s and Catchin J’s were in farily tight pursuit. Christian and Alfie were struggling to find the same air the leaders were sailing in and every attempt at searching for better wind ended in frustration for them. Woot! and Brad Taylors J80 slipped in front of Wild Thing by the next rounding but John and Sam were ahead of the J24 pack. What followed was a dramatic velocity drop to drifting conditions and what little air remained came out of the west. The RC left the marks untouched to at least give the boats some forward momentum. At the next rounding Brad had taken the lead with Wild Thing pulling back ahead of woot!. And there again was the J22 ghosting along. Spirit made its way to the top of the J24’s and the RC shortened course to the original starting line with 2 horns and a radio announcement to make sure everyone was in the know. It would have been a real struggle to get everyone finished if the next mark was used. As the leaders approached the finish two boats decided enough was enough and headed in. Brad and crew took line honors and 2nd overall with Wild Thing in succession and 3rd overall, but Catchin J’s took the night on corrected time. Well done to all competitors in the very variable conditions. Next week’s race will lead to the first of scheduled throw outs. A Solstice evening Raft-Up is planned for 22 June if the weather cooperates. All are invited to attend. More info to come!

Race 3 1st Half

May 25, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

A W6 course with a windward tetrahedron mark lurking in the sun glinting waters greeted the 11 boats that came out on the gorgeous evening. The very warm west winds swung from to W to WNW almost immediately after the start. Just prior to the start a ruckus at the RC boat end is currently under review. As it was, a few boats were left uncontested midway down the start line. Unfortunately, Catching J’s got caught OCS and had to return to the finish line after the rest of the fleet sped off towards the first mark. Wild Thing was sliding along nicely and pretty much led the way around the course for the entire race. Spirit and Vaporize were also in the leading pack around the first few marks as well. With the big shift, the RC changed the course and used Cotton Point as the new windward mark with multiple sounds, C flag, and green flag flying, plus multiple announcements on the radio. This course change actually got the fleet tacking on the shifts especially as they approached the Cotton Point reef. It was great to watch the boats round the Cotton Point reef and pop spinnakers back lit by the low angled sun. Wild thing held on to starboard gybe and appeared to slow down in the shelter of the West shore while most of the J’s gybed immediately after the reef and got back into the steadier winds away from the west shore. While the fleet rounded Cotton Point and headed back to the start pin/leeward mark on the forth leg the wind appeared to be dropping both to the north and south of the course, so the RC decide it would be prudent to head up to the weather mark and shorten the course. Wild Thing held onto their lead coming down the 4th leg by a few boat lengths. Brad Taylor tried to convince the RC that a finish was expected even as other boats were rounding the leeward pin and had to back track around the mark. As this was happening the RC picked up their anchor andhead up the weather leg. Once anchored and as the fleet approached the new finish the shorten course signals were made with two sounds and S flag displayed. Unfortunately for Dave and Nelson it appeared Vaporize fell into a hole somewhere along the last two legs slipping out of the leader pack. Wild Thing prevailed to cross the line first followed by Spirit, Brad’s J/80, and woot! All but one boat finished the course within 8 minutes of each other. Catchin J’s, left behind at the start, had used the shifts well and worked its way back into race after the change in course…nicely done John!! T finished with a timed finish as a beautiful sunset was in progress.Unfortunately, a protest was lodged and the results are considered tentative and under review. They will be updated upon conclusion of the protest “hearing”.

Race 2 1st Half

May 18, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 2 was conducted under broken clouds and warm temperatures with a nice NE wind at 5-7knots. Welcome to Cut Loose, woot! and T to the starting line. The RC set a W6 with the windward mark between Boon and Basin Bays at 026o approximate 1.5 miles from the starting line. At that distance the orange ball was extremely difficult to make out and the RC acknowledges the limitations of using this marking system. A leeward gate was set 75 yards on the course side of the starting line. The start was uneventful with all boats clearing the line with space around them. Witch Way and Vaporize quickly tacked to port. Brad Taylor’s J/80 went to the extreme west of the course and gained the windward mark first followed by Witch Way. On the downwind leg Brad opted to use a smaller symmetrical spinnaker and led the way down the first gate rounding taking the east gate. Witch Way and Vaporize followed almost immediately with a mixed up J24 fleet not far behind them. High Jinx was showing nice form through the spinnaker take down and was holding onto a tight 2nd place in Fleet 24. Animal was one of only two boats that rounded the west gate. During the 2nd Upwind Leg the RC decided the original W6 would be hard to complete within 1.5 hours given the projected forecast for decreasing wind strength. The RC intended to finish the fleet at the windward mark of the 5th leg but a steering cable failure forced the RC boat over to the east gate and set up for a finish after the 4th leg. Meanwhile back in the thick of things Brad and crew were able to fend off Witch Way and Vaporize and again lead the way down the course to the abrupt finish. The winds again proved to favor the J24’s with deep downwind angles in the steady breeze. Brad and crew prevailed to take line honors for evening but Alfie and the Witch Way crew were right on their transom to take their second win for the year. High Jinx and Cut Loose took the next 2 spots respectively and in a dramatic finish Uncle Ludwig stole the air and collapsed Spirts chute within 25 wards of the finish and nipped out the under-crewed Spirit by inches for the 4th spot. The RC would like to thank all the people that helped pick up marks, tow the stranded boat into dock and then unload and retrieve the all the equipment.

Race 1 1st Half

May 11, 2016      Wind Conditions: Medium

Welcome to 2016 Wednesday Night Racing! The opening night was perfect. A nice 7 – 10 knot NE wind with oscillations to the N and plenty of sunshine provided almost ideal sailing for the 8 boats that came out to race the I-5 course. An orange ball set right in the middle of the lake between Boon and Basin bays provided the windward turning point and North Canoe (U3) was used as the leeward mark. Thanks to Steve and Caroline Jackson for their help and company on the RC boat. Within one minute of the start Uncle Ludwig swept uncontested down the line for a pin-end start. (Maybe Kyle was trying to avoid scratching up the new paint job on Uncle Ludwig). With all but one port-tack starter at the pin along with Kyle and crew, the rest of the J-boat pack opted for starting between the boat and mid-line. Witch Way hung back by a fraction of second to have a clear opening right at the boat and established a great early positon to windward of the fleet. Nice start! Vaporize started a few seconds behind Witch Way and tacked off to port seeking clear air.A handful of tacks to the first mark, situated ~ ¾ mile away from the start at 0350, saw Witch Way around first with Animal next and a tight pack including Uncle Ludwig, Vaporize, Spirit, and Catching J’s all in quick succession. Animal struggled to get their chute up and full. Uncle Ludwig split off from the pack and passed Animal on the long but steady downwind leg. John & Sam Tarrant in Catching J’s launched their chute well and took the deepest course to the leeward mark sailing right past the committee boat in fine style. Vaporize looking to make up some time went out the west side of the course to be disappointed not to find the expected higher winds. Once around the 1st leeward mark the fleet seemed to head straight at the committee boat with a greater westerly wind component up to the committee boat. Once they reached the RC boat the fleet fell back into the NE winds and needed another handful of tacks to gain the last windward mark. Vaporize found the winds on the east side of the course on the second downwind leg and moved up through the pack to 3rd boat as the fleet approached the last turning mark. Unfortunately, Dave and Nelson did not have enough course left to recover lost ground. With almost a wire to wire lead congratulations go to the crew of Witch Way on their impressive win for the evening. In a testament to the steady winds all the boats finished within 5 minutes elapsed time .Thanks to Windog who graciously gave extra minutes to the RC to pick up the marks!! Please welcome Christian Wetzel now skippering “t” who got out late and shadowed the fleet around most of the course.
