Race 16

Aug 23, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

When the RC went out before 6:00pm there was no measurable wind for the 16th race of the Wednesday Night Series.  In true form a band of wind started to fill in from the south out of Dunhams Bay.  Surprisingly the wind held for the race which was a W4 starting in the middle of the lake and heading SSW to North Canoe government mark.  With a slight right hand angle of the course many of the 12 boats out took an early port tack for the first mark.  IkoIko lead at the first mark with Cut Loose and Stinger behind.  At the downwind mark the order stayed the same.  On the return downwind run to the finish Stinger managed to get ahead of Cut Loose.  Congratulations to Iko Iko for line honors and 1st on corrected time with Stinger in 2nd and Cut Loose for 3rd.  The after race "debrief" was at the LG Holiday Inn with a dozen in attendance.  Next week is the final race of the 2023 season.  The after race awards party will be held upstairs at the ADK Pub & Brewery.

Race 15

Aug 16, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

The 15th race of the Wednesday Night Series was one for the books.  The weather forcast was for 4 knots out of the south but when the RC went out before 6pm the winds were building from the NNE 6+.  A tetrohedron was set in the middleof the late east of the LGC and the leward start line and pin end were set to the south.  The RC with Rodger Voss as help, selected a W4 course with a .65 mile leg on a heading of 020.  At the start Knot on Call was OCS and was called back to restart.  Since most of the fleet initially went to the left K on C decided to go right as did Joia.  Lucky for the the wind swung right to about 040 deg allowing for a nice lift on starboard tack to the windward mark.  Stinger, Joia and Knot on Call were all close together at the windward mark and had a great run down to the leeward mark.  The 3rd leg saw some great sailing back up and to the downwind finish.  Stinger (WitchWay) had line honors but Joia came in for the win with 3 second on corrected time for 1st and Knot on Call for 3d, 1 second behind Stinger.  There were other close finishes for other boats as well.  The after race party was at the LGC Grotto with a good attendance from some of the non members.  Next weeks after race party will be at the LG Holiday Inn.

Race 14

Aug 09, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

Our 14th race of the series gave the 12 boats that came out to race some wind out of the WNW.  The RC with the help of Graham Blackburn wet a W6 course with the start line just north of Long Island and the windward mark .95 miles away at a heading of 330 deg.  The wind shifted to the left CCW before the start and was reported to be shifty on the western side, with some dead spots.  The race was later shortened to a W4 as the winds had decreased sooner than expected.  Congratulations to Stinger (WitchWay) for line honors and 1st on corrected time, followed by "t" in 2nd and Brass Ring for 3rd.  Next weeks after race get together is at the LGC Grotto.  Alfie will have more information.

Race 13

Aug 02, 2023      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 12 of the Wednesday Night series brought out 12 boats for a nice evening of sailing.  The RC with the help of Grahamn Blackburn decided on a W6 course with a start line east of the LGC and a windward anchored mark at 180 deg about .6 miles away.  All boats had checked in by 6:20 so the race sequence was started.  The start line was a bit too short so the 12 boats were fighting for a clean start.  Stinger (WitchWay) had a great start and took a tack toward Long Island.  We on the RC noticed he did alot of tacking to stay in the pressure and keep the lift.  The fleet was close behind at the first mark with the winds holding at about 5 knots.  On the downwind run Stinger pulled ahead of the fleet.  Uncle Ludwig managed to get inside of Cut Loose at the second mark, moving them into 2nd place for the upwid race to mark 3.  Cut Loose split tacks with Uncle Ludwig and managed to retake the 2nd spot for the downwind run to mark 4.  The RC decided to make the race a W5 and shortened the race at mark 5.  Congratulations to Stinger for both line honors and 1st on corrected time with Cut Loose in 2nd and Uncle Ludwig 3rd.  I would like to remind everyone that when you checkin with the RC before the race starts to approach the RC boat on starboard and within a boat length so the course can be given to you and I donot have to shout it out.  It makes my duties to you easier.  Next weeks after race get together is at ADK Pub & Brewery.  On 8/14 we are invited back to the LGC grotta for our after race party.  A reminder will be sent out to keep you up to date on the schedule.  See you on the water.

Race 12

Jul 26, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

Please note that I made a scoring input mistake with the results of this race regarding Stinger (WitchWay).  I had entered their time as 0:1:17 instead of 1:17:34.  The final results did not change.  Race 12 of the Wednesday Night Series brought the 11 crew that came out to race something different, WIND!  The RC with the help of Grahamn Blackburn for "t" set a W4 course using South Canoe as the turning mark.  As in the sailing instructions when this mark is called out, the competitors are to round both islands an the southern government mark to PORT.  The race started with about 10 knots of wind.  Some took the middle of the course route whereas others tried getting a lift off of Long Island.  Some passed close to Little Canoe and other took a wide approach.  Stinger (WitchWay) took the middle of the road and gave the islands some room allowing them to lead the fleet for most of the way.  Knot on Call came a bit closer to the islands and almost forgot that South Canoe was call, not North Canoe.  Upond noticing that Alfie and crew keep going, they tacked and went around the mark properly.  The fleet was grouped closely as they set their chutes headed to the turning mark.  On the 3rd leg the winds backed down to about 7 knots, stretching out the fleet some.  In the end, Woot took line honors for the finish but the win went to Stinger with 1st place on corrected time.  Knot on Call was 2nd with Uncle Ludwig in 3rd.  Next weeks after race get together is at Adirondack Pub and Brewery.

Race 11

Jul 20, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

The winds finally gave the 11 boats that came out to race some decent conditions.  Thanks to Susanne from Wild Thing for helping out with RC duties.  The RC set a course start line near Hogback/Long Island and a tetrahedron about .7 miles away at 330 deg. with a W-5 course selection.  The boats had a good beat to the weather mark 1 with  Woot leading the way with WitchWay (Stinger) a few seconds behind.  IkoIko and Knot on Call were close also.  On the downwind to mark 2 the order stayed the same.  Knot on Call decided to go left upwind to mark 3 whereas the rest of the fleet chose to go right.  The evening winds started moving to the right on this leg giving the boats that went right an advantage.  After rounding mark 3  Woot and WitchWay (Stinger) pulled ahead of the fleet headed to mark 4.  On the final leg upwind to the finish the wind went further to the right making that leg a long port tack to the finish.  Congratulations to Alfie and crew on both line honors and 1st place on corrected time with Iko Iko in 2nd and Knot on Call for 3rd.  Next week it is planned to have the after race festivities at the Adirondack Pub and Brewery.

Race 10

Jul 12, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

Race 10 of the Wednesday Night Racing series had a beautiful evening of sailing.  The RC with the help of Rodger Voss set a w4 course with a tetrohedron at .7 miles on a heading of 170 deg with the start line north of the LG Club on the western shore.  At the start of the race for the 11 boats that came out to race, found that the committee boat end was favored as the wind had swung 35 deg to the right.  Thanks to Rik Alexanderson, he went to the weather mark and moved it to better align the course for the change in wind.  This was after the last boat to round the first mark.  At mark 2 (leeward) RC hoisted code flag Charlie and announced on vhf 72 that this 3rd leg would be a change of course GREEN which meant that the next mark was moved to the right from where it was originally set.  Congratulations to the crew of WitchWay (Stinger) for boat line honors and 1st on corrected time with IkoIko 2nd and Cut Loose 3rd.  Ater the racing we were invited to drop by the LG Club Grotto for some regatta beer and a bite to eat.  Thanks to Joe Favero for setting this up.   Next week we are going to Souci Oocia ( Chineese place south of the village on Rt 9) for the after race gathering.  John Carr will be helping out on RC duties this next wednesday.

Race 9

Jul 05, 2023      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 9 had a weather delay as a large thunderstorm cell was rolling over the fleet as the boats were coming out for the evening race.  The RC with help from Justine from Eclat decided to send everyone back to the LG Club to get out of the pending storm.  About 30 min later the storm passed with a fresh breeze from the NNE.  A course of W4 was set with a tetrahedron set at 45 deg  from the start line.  During the start sequence the winds went away for a light wind race.  The wind also changed it's mind and shifted to the SSW making for an interesting start.  Some boats tried to start with their chutes up and others stayed with just head sails.  On the 1st leg some wind filled in from the SSE and more chutes went up.  Knot on Call seemed to figure out what the winds were doing and was able to make the right choices, leading the 8 boats to the 1st mark.  On leg 2 most boats were flying chutes as the wind changed directions again.  The fleet was close together at mark 2.  The RC pulled up it's anchor and decided to shorted course at mark 3 with the wind velocity dropping.  Congratulations to Knot on Call for both Line Honors and 1st on Corrected time.  IkoIko came in 2nd with first time out this year Doug Brandow taking 3rd.  Also a cudos to Fat Star on a 4th place finish, a big improvement for that crew.  Next Week the LG Club has asked all Wednesday Night sailors to come over to the Grotto for some food and free beer.  Visiting boats may dock at the northern docks.  See you next week.

Race 8

Jun 28, 2023      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 8 for Wednesday Night Racing almost looked like a non event.  Mother Nature brought us some late afternoon thunderstorms with heavy rain.  True to form, the weather cleared out but so did the wind.  It was a slow go for the 8 boats that came out after the storm to get down to the start area at North Canoe government mark.  The race started about 6:50 in very light conditions but after 20 minutes the wind filled in from the N-NW as forcast.  With a mark set at 050 deg from the start line about 1 mile away the fleet started to move.  The second leg of a W3 course gave the sailors a nice spinnaker run down to mark 2.  The RC decided to do a Change of Couse Minus which means that the next leg would be not as long as the previous distance of 1 mile.  Congratulations to Wild Thing with Line Honors.  Congratulations to IkoIko for 1st on corrected to,e wotj Not on Call 2nd and Wild Thing in 3rd.  We are coming up to the 4th of July Holiday and we are at the half way of the season all ready.  A thanks goes out to Lori from the crew of "t" for helping out with rotating RC duties.  I gave "t" a RC duty credit for this race because they could not make the race but did provide someone to help.  If Eclat can provide someone for this next week July 5th and Wild Thing on July 12th would be appriciated.  See you on the water

Race 7

Jun 21, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

The first race of summer for the Wednesday Night Racing brought out 11 boats for a nice day of sailing.  The RC  with help from Tom (Cut Loose) set a southerly course of W6 with the tetrohedron about .7 miles south of the start line.  The 11 boats got off to a clean start.  At mark 1 was Woot, Stinger and Cut Loose.  On the downwind run the chutes went up fast and Woot lead the fleet down to the 2nd mark @ 20:25 and Wild Thing rounding 3rd.  On the 3rd leg of the race Woot managed to pull ahead some more time on the fleet rounding farther ahead of the fleet.  On leg 4 Woot took a starboard jib over to Long Island and fell into a light spot whereas the other boats stayed to the center of the course.  At the 4th mark the lead switched as Wild Thing rounded ahead of the fleet @ 45:35 and Stinger @ 47:37.  The RC decided to shorten the race at the 5th mark as the fleet was getting stretched out.  At the finish line and line honors was Wild Thing @ 59:04 and Stinger @ 01:01:10.  Congratulations to Stinger and crew for 1st on corrected time with IkoIko 2nd and Cut Loose 3rd.  Next week "T" will be providing someone to help out with RC duties.  See you out on the water next Wednesday.

Race 6

Jun 14, 2023      Wind Conditions: Light

Wednesday night had a forcast of very light winds that were to be SSE changing to E was not a good one.  Of course racing on Wednesday's never does what the forcast is.  When to RC went out to figure out a course for the evening sail the wind was about 6 from the SSE but while the 6 boats that came out to play were checking in, the winds dropped to about 3 at the start.  The RC choose a W4 course just in case the wind increased.  Uncle Ludwig tried to get east a catch a lift off of Long Island.  Iko Iko ininially went right and then tacked left to get the usual lift off of Long Island.  Meanwhile Stinger stayed up the middle of the course.  As it turned out there was no lift off of Long Island so those that went that way were left behind.  Windfall and Stinger caught a ridge of air from the West and pulled out ahead of the fleet.  Uncle Ludwig managed to get away from the Long Island trap and caught some of the westerly.  The RC decided to Shorten Course at the first mark which was North Canoe government mark.  Line honors went to Stinger along  with 1st on corrected time, followed by Uncle Ludwid 2nd and Windfall 3rd.  A regatta credit was given to Knot on Call because Cathryn Olsen helped out with RC duty and Joe was not backhere in NY.  Next weeks race has a crew member fronm Cut Loose helping out the RC boat.

Race 5

Jun 07, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

Wednesday Night Racing brought out 9 boats for a chilly evening of racing.  The RC set a W 6 course with the winds coming from 345 deg and the start line down near HogBack government mark and the hip it tee hop as the start pin and the downwind turning mark.  Remember that with a windward start looking upwind the pin in on the left and the RC boat on the right.   It appeared that at Mark 1 that Alfie and crew lead the fleet.  At the downwind mark it was Alfie (Stinger) followed by IkoIko, CutLoose and Uncle Ludwig.  Mark 3 (Windward) had Stinger 1st, Uncle Ludwig, IkoIko and CutLoose. On the next downwind leg Stinger was 1st but the order shuffled around with Uncle Ludwig 2nd, IkoIko 3rd and CutLoose 4th.  The winds were slowing down as the sun was getting ready to set so the RC pulled anchor and Shorten the Course at the Windward mark making the race 5 legs instead of 6.  Congratulations to Stinger for both line honors and 1st on corrected time with IkoIko 2nd and Uncle Ludwig 3rd.

Race 4

May 31, 2023      Wind Conditions: Light

Race 4 of the Wednesday Night Series gave us a very nice evening with light winds out of 180 deg.  We had 9 boats on the start line as more and more boats are getting in the water.  The RC with the help of Mike Bonn ( Woot) set a course of W4 a mile north of North Canoe governmaent mark.  At the start Code Flag X-Ray was displayed with 1 sound indicating that 3 boats were OCS (On Course Side) of the start lines.  The were hailed and all 3 came back and restarted.  Remember that if the "P" Flag (blue with white square) was displayed you DONOT have to go around the end, you need to only dip the line.  At the first mark Woot was first @ 16:53 followed by IkoIko, CutLoose and Windfall.  On the downwind leg Woot extended their lead and rounded @ 31:30 with IkoIko @ 32:15,  Windfall and CutLoose.  On the 3rd leg the evening winds shifted to the SSW and the usual decrease in velocity.  At the finish with BOTH Line Honors and 1st on Corrected time was the crew of Woot beating out IkoIko by 8 seconds.  Unclce Ludwig was 3rd.

Race3

May 24, 2023      Wind Conditions: Heavy

Oh What a Night!  Our 3rd race of the season brought 7 boats out to sail a W4 course from mid lake to the NE about 1.1 miles to a set mark tetrohydron.  The wind was ininially light to non existent buy during the 5 minute start sequence the wind filled in from the North with an attitude at 20+ knots.  Rodger and Dave on RC decided to motor up to the first mark and do a course change bringing the mark more northerly to align with the start line.  We made the call on the radio.  On the 2nd leg half of the fleet started to fly their chutes but all ended on main and headsail as the winds were heafty.  At the finish Woot was first across the line with Iko Iko second.  Iko Iko took 1st on corrected time followed by Witch Way and Eclat.  We had two boats as DNF.  The RC after the race went and retrieved the marks.  When trying to get the hip-it-tee-hop, I caught one end of the loose line around the prop.  Lucky for me when I put the outdrive up all the way the line slipped off.  I decided to leave the mark till the morning and went out and got it as planned.  Next week Woot will supply a person to assist me with the racing.

Race 2

May 17, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

The second race of the Wednesday Night series had a NNW wind that keep moving to the NW.  The race committe used the RC boat from the LG Club for the first time (with permission) because Lake George was hosting the J/24 US National Championship May 19, 20 and 21 of this year.  Besides the 6 regular racers we had 6 guest boats from off the lake using this race as a practice for the up coming regatta.  On board the RC boat was the Chip Till (PRO) for the regatta, Dave Dougall, Diana Voss (recorder) and Sandy Powel (flags) so that we could practice together for the upcoming event.  The RC had to move the boat 3 times in order to get aligned with the changing winds.  A course of W4 was used in the area between Canoe Is and Long Is with a tetrohedron set about .9 miles to the NW, using the hip-it-t-hop pin end as the leeward mark.  The race went off on time and with the winds moving left made to not too many tacks with a reach down wind.  At the finish line with line honors and 1st on corrected time was Redline @38:07.  Our local finishers were Woot @38:26, Iko Iko at 40:58, "t" @ 42:04, and Cut Loose @44:46.  There we elapsted times (not corrected).  For our local boat scoring on CT was Iko Iko 1st, Woot 2nd, "t" 3rd, and Cut Loose 4th.  The other 3 boats were either OCS or DNF.  This next Wednesday Night race we will be using Dave's "Blue Convertible"  for the RC boat.

Race 1

May 10, 2023      Wind Conditions: Medium

Happy Days are Here Again!  After a long winter, unless you ski, we sailors had our 1st race of the season with very nice sailing and a beautiful afternoon.  The RC with Dave and Rodger set a mark north near basin bay and the start line south of there about .9 miles, and set a W-4 course .  As the start sequence was going the wind started to veer to the left (west) as the forcast had predicted.  Uncle Ludwig decided on a Port start at the pin end and nailed it.  Witch Way was a bit late to the pin end start and the other three boats opted for the middle or boat end of the line.   Uncle Ludwig led the fleet to the first mark @ 10:17 with Witch Way, Woot, Fat Star and "t" behind.  The rest of the race was a follow the leader with Uncle Ludwig grabbing 1st place on line honors and corrected time.  Next weeks race the RC Boat will be the LG Club boat as we will have some off the lake J/24's for a practice race because of the J/24 National Championship regatta the end of next week.  There should be some high powered crews on the line this next week.  The after race party was held at the LG Holiday Inn and attended by crews for 4 of the 5 boats out on the water.
